Casner & Edwards’ Scott Harshbarger Speaks at Citizens for Juvenile Justice’s 25th Anniversary 2019 Leadership Celebration
Casner & Edwards LLP attorney Scott Harshbarger spoke at the Citizens for Juvenile Justice (CfJJ) 2019 Leadership Celebration, November 21, 2019 in Boston, MA. Harshbarger is a 2011 honoree, and, as Attorney General, was a key figure in founding the organization. In introducing Harshbarger, CfJJ noted, “as a result of his leadership, in collaboration with CfJJ and its supporters, legislation sponsored by the Governor and the state’s District Attorneys to provide automatic transfer of juveniles to the adult system for a range of serious crimes, was limited to just murder cases and laid the ground work for the Massachusetts juvenile justice system to once again become a national model and redefine Youth Justice.”
In his remarks, Harshbarger commended CfJJ, its founders and supporters for their consistent advocacy in preserving the national model and reforms, demonstrating that prevention, early intervention and individualized care and treatment continue to be the best and cheapest form of public protection, and is a great example of how evidence-based policies demonstrate how to be tough but smart in meeting the challenge of crime. He also noted that successful advocacy in a democracy requires active engagement by citizens in the political process. The office of citizen is the most important office since our government leaders must have the consent of the governed. Quoting John Gardner, Harshbarger urged everyone to understand that, today, more than ever, “democracy is not a spectator sport.”
Harshbarger is Senior Counsel in Casner & Edwards’ Litigation and Nonprofit Groups providing strategic counsel for business ethics, corporate investigations and defense, compliance and risk management, corporate and governance, and government regulation. He has had a long and successful public service career as a public defender, civil rights attorney, Middlesex District Attorney and recognized as a national leader during his term as Massachusetts Attorney General. Harshbarger regularly speaks to state and national business groups, industry and legal associations and college audiences and often appears in the national media and on New England television as a commentator and news analyst.
CfJJ’s annual Leadership Celebration brings together system leaders, advocates, service providers, parents, youth, and community members from across Massachusetts to celebrate and advance our work to make the juvenile justice system fair, effective, and developmentally appropriate. 2019 marks CfJJ’s 25th anniversary.
