Casner & Edwards Hosts Pro Bono Training with Kids in Need of Defense (KIND)
On January 11, 2017, Casner & Edwards, LLP hosted “Children in Removal Proceedings: Overview of Immigration Court, Case Process, and Forms of Legal Relief” at the firm’s Boston office. Marc E. Fitzgerald, a partner in Casner’s Family Law Group, organized the event with Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), a national organization that protects unaccompanied children who enter the US immigration system alone to ensure that no child appears in court without an attorney.
Designed for pro bono attorneys, the session provided guidance on representing a KIND client in the 2017 political and legal climate, including adjudications at the Boston Immigration Court, Boston USCIS and Asylum Office, and county probate courts.
KIND was founded by Angelina Jolie and the Microsoft Corporation to create a pro bono movement of law firms, corporations, nongovernmental organizations, universities, and volunteers to provide quality and compassionate legal counsel to unaccompanied refugee and immigrant children in the United States. KIND provides pro bono attorneys to represent unaccompanied children in their deportation proceedings, as well as legal screenings, and Know Your Rights presentations.
