Casner & Edwards LLP hosted the New England regional bankruptcy moot court competition at the firm’s Boston office on February 17th. Suffolk University Law School students Brooke McNeill and Saige Jutras won the team competition, and University of Maine Law School student Tyler Lauzon won best oral advocate. This event served as a practice round for the 2017 Duberstein Moot Court Competition held in New York City on March 4 - March 6. At the New York Duberstein Competition, the Suffolk team advanced to the elite eight, and were eliminated in a close argument against the University of Miami School of Law, which team ultimately placed second out of a total of 59 teams competing in this year’s Duberstein Competition.
Lynne F. Riley, a partner in Casner’s Bankruptcy & Restructuring Group practice, organized the regional event which was co-sponsored by the American Bankruptcy Institute and the First Circuit Fellows of the American College of Bankruptcy. Last week, at the American College of Bankruptcy’s annual induction ceremony in Washington D.C., Casner partner Michael J. Goldberg was named as the new Regent for the First Circuit.
ABI’s Annual Duberstein Bankruptcy Moot Court Competition is widely recognized as one of the nation’s preeminent moot court competitions. The competition promotes and recognizes the finest oral and written advocacy on significant issues in bankruptcy practice. Approximately 60 law school teams participate each year, making this the largest single site appellate moot court competition. The competition culminates in a gala awards dinner at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel in Manhattan. The dinner draws more than 1,000 attendees, including many leading bankruptcy judges and practitioners.
