Boston law firm Casner & Edwards, LLP is proud to announce that attorney Michael J. Fencer serves as program co-chair, with attorney Francis C. Morrissey of Braintree, of the Massachusetts Bar Association (MBA) Student Loan Bankruptcy Assistance Project. In this role, Fencer and other attorneys involved will assist placing student loan borrowers who may meet the “undue hardship” criteria under the Bankruptcy Code with pro bono legal representation in adversary proceedings seeking to discharge student debt. Sponsored by MBA’s Complex Commercial Litigation Section, the goal of the program is to help alleviate the federal student loan debt crisis in Massachusetts. Fencer was joined by Morrissey and others at a program launch reception on January 24, 2018.
According to an article published in the MBA’s eJournal, the MBA, in partnership with the Attorney General’s Office and the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, established a panel of pro bono attorneys and law firms willing to represent student borrowers in adversary proceedings seeking to discharge student debt. The initiative was a recommendation of the Student Debt Working Group, established by Attorney General Healey and Boston Chamber CEO Jim Rooney in 2016 to bring together leaders from the business community, legal community, and government to exchange ideas and develop concrete proposals for improving the state of student debt and access to higher education in Massachusetts.
