Casner & Edwards Attorney Anita S. Lichtblau Presented at the BBA Program, "It's Election Season: The Rules of the Road on Political Activity of Tax-Exempt Organizations"
Boston law firm Casner & Edwards, LLP announces that attorney Anita S. Lichtblau presented at the Boston Bar Association (BBA) seminar, “It's Election Season: The Rules of the Road on Political Activity of Tax- Exempt Organizations,” on September 27th at the BBA offices.
Sponsored by the BBA’s Tax-Exempt Organizations Section, Lichtblau’s presentation discussed and compared the federal tax code restrictions on political campaign activities of different types of tax-exempt organizations, including 501(c)(3)s, 501(c)(4s) and 501(c)(6)s. The seminar covered campaign activity, as well as voter registration, campaign debates and other activities that may be carried out in a nonpartisan manner. Lichtblau also addressed issues that arise when a 501(c)(3), which is prohibited from engaging in any political campaign activity, is affiliated with an exempt organization that may conduct some campaign activity, such as a 501(c)(4). Lastly, she briefly touched on other relevant federal laws, such as those that restrict the ability of federal grantees to engage in political activities, as well as federal election laws.
As a member of Casner & Edwards’ Nonprofit Practice Group, Lichtblau advises nonprofit organizations on wide variety of legal issues, including formation of organizations and application for tax-exempt status, maintenance of tax-exempt status, governance, lobbying and political activity, creation of corporate policies, employment matters, and government and private grants and contracts. Lichtblau is co-chair of the Legal Education Committee of the Tax-Exempt Organization Section of the BBA and a member of the Section’s Chapter 180 Working Group. She is also a member of the BBA Tax-Exempt Organization Steering Committee.
