Federal and state taxation; Wealth Management
John H. Ashby is a partner with a practice concentrated
in the areas of taxation and wealth management.
Over his career Mr. Ashby has successfully
dealt with complex federal and state tax
matters for individuals and business entities,
estates and trusts. Mr. Ashby counsels
families with connections to diverse parts
of the globe and helps them with the intricacies
of navigating U.S. tax laws applicable
to non-residents, including tax laws of
concern to those contemplating immigration
to this country.
Mr. Ashby is a founding member of The Tax
Luncheon Group, an informal group of Boston
area tax practitioners who have been meeting
monthly for thirty years to exchange ideas
and deal with developments in the arena
of taxation. He is admitted to practice
not only in Massachusetts but also in
the United States Tax Court and the Court
of Federal Claims.
Mr. Ashby’s avocation is cycling,
which he pursues with the same zeal he
tackles the practice of law. He commutes
by bicycle daily from Chestnut Hill to
downtown Boston. He has also crossed the
country three times west to east and three
times south to north, taking on some of
the most challenging routes.
Mr. Ashby is a graduate of Harvard College,
cum laude, and Harvard Law School.
Following completion of his undergraduate
studies, he studied at Trinity College,
Cambridge, as Harvard’s Fiske scholar.
Immediately following graduation from
law school, he served as a law clerk to
Justice R. Ammi Cutter of the Massachusetts
Supreme Judicial Court. He is a member
of the Boston, Massachusetts and American
Bar Associations and the American Law
Institute.
